This marks the conclusion of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with the production studio revealing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for more than 25 years and included dozens of filler arcs. Commencing in the new year, after the current storyline wraps up, the anime will go on a three-month hiatus until spring, when the next major arc kicks off.
Updated Production Plan
Going forward, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every year for a cap of two dozen installments. Toei explains this will enable the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the universe — incorporating more content, rhythm, and pacing of the source material.” Yet, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the series' break, which means additional related projects, such as Netflix's live-action season 2, set to premiere during this gap.
Learning from Past Breaks
The series anime had a six-month break that began in October 2024 and concluded in early 2025. The intermission was for the animators to improve the animation quality and let the comic to get further ahead to avoid a faster anime pace and repetitive summaries. The anime greatly benefited from this respite, and it has been able to deliver fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.
Adopting Modern Trends
While some recap episodes sprouted up during the recent run, the positive effects of this updated approach greatly outweigh the odd pause in the story. This also gives the original work, which is presently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the adaptation. Per the announcement, this may result in a single installment of the series adapting one chapter, with some alternatively handling one and a half chapters or additional to compensate for scheduling.
It's the end of a generation for anime, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of creation, which prioritized being on air for most of the calendar. This explains why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many filler arcs, and the standard of the art can change drastically between installments and the following. Nowadays, series creation is structured in cours, with a couple at most releasing each annually, enabling improved visuals and greater accuracy to the original work.
